As Malta is ideally located in the heart of the Mediterranean, some 93 Km south of the Italian island of Sicily and it is just a few hours’ flying time from most mainland European cities. Choose from scheduled services or charter flights, many of which offer a convenient departure point from European regional cities. The national airline Air Malta, operates flights to and from all the major airports in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

The Islands are included in several cruise itineraries and provide an excellent base or stop-over for sailing. You can also get here on a scheduled ferry direct from several Mediterranean ports.

Public Bus

The public bus service in Malta and Gozo is a good way to get around as buses serve the major tourist areas, and are definitely the cheapest (2.50 euros for a day ticket). Although bus stops are found almost everywhere, the main bus terminus is in Valletta just outside city gate. There are direct links from here to almost all towns and villages.

Driving through the islands’ roads will allow you to explore every hidden part including beaches, villages .. therefore this way you can get an authentic taste of the Mediterranean culture. There are numerous rental car companies with various rental options such as scooters and mountain bikes at affordable rates. All the road signs are in English and driving is on the left.

Renting a car may tend to be stressful as traffic rules and discipline is sometimes ignored (this is probably part of the Mediterranean trait). Driving in Gozo is less stressful and more pleasant as there is less traffic. The quieter roads are mostly evident during the afternoons in most villages (also in Malta) as locals enjoy their daily siesta.

Getting around by taxi is increasing in popularity in Malta. It is always best to ensure that taxis are registered black or white taxis. There are also a number of private taxi companies operating 24 hours at reasonable tariffs. Official taxis should charge meter rates and may tend to look expensive when the distance is considered.

Travelling by ferry service links is common in Malta. The most popular link is between Malta and sister island Gozo. The Gozo channel service operates daily all year round following winter and summer schedules. This accommodates the large number of commuters coming and going from Gozo to Malta to and vice versa. The trip takes about 20- 25 minutes each way and is a car and passenger service. The ferry is from Cirkewwa which is the furthest Northern point of Malta, it takes about 45 minutes getting from Valletta to Cirkewwa by bus

There are also regular boat services from Cirkewwa where you can choose your trip to Comino Blue lagoon or to some other bays in Gozo. Such trips are ideal for day boat trips.

Getting to Comino’s resorts is by ferry which operates during the Summer months.

The Marsamxett ferry a frequent ferry trip linking the Strand in Sliema to Valletta. This is very pleasant and much quicker than bus or taxi! You can get a good look at Valletta and its wonderful bastions.

Enjoying Malta’s sights from sea is just something different and spectacular. There area number of harbour cruises even using the traditional Maltese ‘dghajsa’/ luzzu boats.

The distinct yellow water taxis are a new fleet of efficient and fast transport between major points on the island. The service operates for most of the year and is weather permitting.

The Virtu ferry catamaran service offers trips from Pinto Wharf terminal in Valletta Malta to Sicily. The trip will take approx 90 minutes to Pozzallo and 3 hours to Catania or Reggio Calabria.

Travelling to Malta by Air is maybe the most convenient source of Travel. All flights land at Malta International Airport https://www.maltairport.com in Gudja.

Due to Malta’s favourable weather renting a bike whilst on holiday could be another means to getting around. It may be uncommon due to our hilly landscape and busy roads. When renting a bike, pay attention to drivers who sometimes might be inconsiderate towards bike
